Microsoft has announced the launch of its Copilot artificial intelligence (AI) assistant on Windows 10 and 11 devices, but the new service doesn’t appear to be running fully efficiently at the moment.
Last week’s official update confirmed that Microsoft Copilot is running and the icon is visible on the Windows taskbar, but all is not as it seems.
The official synopsis describes Copiot for Windows as “an AI assistant that helps you get answers and inspiration from the web, supports creativity and collaboration, and helps you focus on the task at hand.”
While the AI assistant is embedded in Windows 11 version 23H2 devices by default, it is disabled on Windows 11 version 22H2 devices.
In addition to this, Deskmodder users also discovered additional access to other Windows 11 devices, but most importantly, the application did not provide support for the actual range of Copilot capabilities and properties.
How do I check if Microsoft Copilot is available on my device?
The app may not appear at first glance, but it will appear once Microsoft Edge is updated to the latest version.
To check if the Microsoft Copilot tool is being used on your system, use the following path.
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
Change the sort order to “Installation date” or enter Copilot in the search field.
If you see Microsoft Copilot listed, it is installed.
You may also want to use the uninstall option to remove the app from your device. Navigating to Advanced Options will reveal more details.
More information is expected, but Deskmodder’s findings seem to point to the Copilot app serving as a placeholder for its current form.
Users may also have different experiences depending on their region, but the overall product is unclear. Microsoft may roll out a fully developed app with updates to all devices at some point, and there are rumors of work on Windows 12 as well.
Microsoft is known to bring new apps to devices without full releases or extensive information, so this is an area we’ll have to keep an eye on.
