YouTube CEO stresses training AI models on its videos is against the rules

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan says using videos from the platform to train artificial intelligence (AI) models would be a “clear violation” of YouTube’s terms and conditions because OpenAI’s CTO “had no idea” Whether the tool has training videos on YouTube.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Mohan made his first public statement about OpenAI’s Sora, which was announced earlier this year to a flurry of buzz and excitement.

“From a creator’s perspective, creators have certain expectations when they upload their hard work to our platform. One of those expectations is to adhere to the terms of service. It does not allow for the downloading of transcripts or video clips content, which is a clear violation of our Terms of Service. These are the rules for content on our platform.”

In March, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati spoke to the Wall Street Journal about a new generative AI tool that can apparently create videos that are minutes long. When asked about Sora’s training data, Murati said, “We used public data and licensed data,” but the CTO didn’t know if it included content from YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.

OpenAI already faces questions about its training data

OpenAI has been opaque about the training data used to create large language models (LLMs) and other generative AI tools. This resulted in multiple lawsuits.

Comedian Sarah Silverman and other authors sued OpenAI under California’s unfair competition laws, accusing the company of using copyrighted material in training data.

The New York Times also filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the AI company, claiming that OpenAI should be responsible for losses caused by its illegal use of copyrighted material.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that OpenAI plans to use YouTube video transcriptions to train ChatGPT-5, suggesting they are not fazed by the lawsuit.
