X adds support for global keys on iOS

X, formerly Twitter, is Rolling out support for keys, a new login method that is more secure than traditional passwords, available to all iOS users around the world. The option first rolled out in January, but was only available to iOS users in the U.S.

In update X@Security Account On Monday, the company said that iOS users globally can now use keys as a login option. Similar technology has been added to other popular apps and services, including PayPal, TikTok, WhatsApp, GitHub, and more. Last fall, Google made passwords the default login option for all users. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and others also support the option.

Passkey technology is sponsored by Google, Apple, Microsoft, the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. The idea is to make passwordless logins work across different devices, operating systems, and web browsers. Unlike traditional logins that require a username and password combination, Keys uses biometric authentication (such as Face ID or Touch ID), a PIN, or a physical security authentication key to authenticate logins. The process combines the benefits of two-factor authentication (2FA) into a single step, making logging in more seamless while maintaining greater security.

For X, this feature helps users protect their accounts from being hacked by bad actors. The social network has been the site of several high-profile hacks over the years, including one in January when the SEC’s X account shared unauthorized posts about the approval of a Bitcoin ETF. Donald Trump Jr.’s X account was also hacked, posting a false message stating that Donald Trump had died. There was also a crypto scam in 2020 that resulted in the compromise of many larger accounts, including those of Apple, President Biden, and X owner Elon Musk, among others.

This new addition could also help X users who previously relied on SMS 2FA to re-secure their accounts, as X announced last year that it would be removing the option for non-paying users. X has debate ost reduction measures can be abused by bad actors, such as in the case of SIM swapping. But the reality is that it reduces the security of X.

X provides users with Instructions on how to start using keys on iOS. There’s no word yet on when Android users will have the option.
