WhatsApp trials Meta AI chatbot in India and more markets

WhatsApp is testing its chatbot Meta AI, powered by a large language model, with users in India and some other markets, signaling its intention to leverage its large user base to expand its artificial intelligence offerings.

Many say the company recently began testing an artificial intelligence chatbot, which so far is only available in limited markets including the United States, with some users in India. With more than 500 million WhatsApp users, India is the messaging service’s largest market.

Meta confirmed the move in a statement. “Our generative AI experiences are in various stages of development, and we are publicly testing a range of them in a limited capacity,” a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Meta launched its universal assistant Meta AI at the end of September. The AI chatbot is designed to answer user queries directly in the chat and provide them with the ability to generate realistic images based on text prompts.

WhatsApp’s massive global user base (more than 2 billion monthly active users) provides Meta with a very unique opportunity to expand its artificial intelligence products. By integrating Meta AI into WhatsApp, the Facebook parent company can showcase its advanced language models and image generation capabilities to a large audience, potentially dwarfing the reach of its competitors.

The company separately confirmed earlier this week that it will launch Llama 3, the next version of its open source large language model, within the next month.
