Sports betting operator FanDuel will make its Washington, D.C., debut next week (April 15), following the D.C. Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG) announcing last month that the company would become a subcontractor for Intralot.

FanDuel will take over GambetDC, which has been powered by Intralot since 2019. Intralot Inc. is an existing lottery and sports betting system provider that partners with OLG.

When GambetDC launched a few years ago, the company secured exclusive rights to online betting in the DC area.

Customers have since complained about unfavorable odds and poor performance, leading the office to seek help from FanDuel to become the new exclusive operator.

The No. 1 sports betting brand in the U.S. is now expected to take over GambetDC’s retail operations as well.

FanDuel will continue to operate within its closed market area, which limits access to non-exclusive sportsbooks outside a two-block radius of professional sports facilities such as Capital One Stadium, Audi Field and Nationals Park.

FanDuel, meanwhile, is expanding into other states, most recently North Carolina, where they partnered with NFL team the Carolina Panthers in March.

Complaints about Washington, D.C. sportsbooks

The move has been in the works since January when the lottery office and board of governors met. Kenyan McDuffie, chairman of the DC Council’s Business and Economic Development Committee (CBED), shared their dissatisfaction with GambetDC.

“I’ve heard from a lot of residents that they’re upset about the area’s poor performance when it comes to sports betting,” he said.

“I absolutely feel the same way about availability, customer service and significant revenue declines. We know the current model simply isn’t working,” McDuffie added of the venture, which launched in May 2020 Since then, $8.5 million in taxes has been paid to the district.

At the same meeting, it was suggested that Intralot was preparing to bring in subcontractors. Just three months later, with the launch of the new company on April 15, this became a reality.
