Today is the day that Nintendo officially cancels online services for 3DS and Wii U

Back in January, Nintendo warned us that on April 8, more specifically at 4 PM PDT, online services for the 3DS and Wii U would officially be taken out of the background and given a humane shot, presumably by one owner Playstation experience vet present.

While eShops for both consoles were closed last month, there may still be a glimmer of hope for online services, but as the time approaches, it seems unlikely that Nintendo will grant a reprieve, with two games available within hours All machines will stop running online.

While you can still happily play them offline, if you prefer to play online games like Splatoon with friends, this will no longer be the case once the deadline passes.

Nintendo says on its support page:

Thank you very much for your support of our products.

On April 8, 2024 at 4:00 PM PDT, online gaming and other features that use online communications will terminate for Nintendo 3DS* and Wii U software. This also includes online cooperative play, internet rankings, and data distribution.

We sincerely thank players for their long-term use of the online services of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software, and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Last week we reported on the Stop Killing Games campaign, and while the games themselves are still playable here, many features of many popular games are not, further highlighting how little say gamers have over the products they choose to spend their money on. .

Will Wii U and 3DS still be available after Nintendo discontinues production?

Nintendo’s FAQ makes it completely clear what will and won’t work going forward:

Can I still play the game offline even after the online service ends?
Yes. Players can still use features and game modes that don’t require online communication.

Will online services still be available even after they generally end?
Online services for the following software are still available, but this may also end at some point in the future.

  • Pokémon Bank
  • Pokémon Transporter

Will you also end online services for software from publishers other than Nintendo?
With some exceptions, all online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software will be terminated. Please contact the publisher for information about their software’s online offerings.

While it’s probably unrealistic for consumers to expect companies to support their purchases indefinitely, there’s still no clear indication at the time of purchase that one day the online game you’re buying may become worthless. As we move into an era of all-digital gaming, publishers of these online products will eventually need to address this issue.
