TikTok will start labeling AI-generated content

TikTok will automatically tag artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content from other sources as part of an effort to improve AI clarity and understanding.

TikTok will reportedly embed content voucher technology, a new tool developed jointly with the Content Provenance and Authenticity Alliance (C2PA), a first for the social media platform.

It adds “digital nutrition labels” to content on video hosting apps, informing users about AI-generated content, how and when it was created.

TikTok has already ensured that content produced using its own AI effects is clearly stated, but now the app is taking further action as part of a crackdown on disinformation.

Adam Presser, head of operations, trust and safety at TikTok, commented on the development.

“AI-generated content is an incredible creative outlet, but transparency is critical for audiences,” he said.

“By collaborating with peers to flag content across platforms, we make it easy for creators to explore AI-generated content responsibly while continuing to block harmful or misleading AI-generated content (AIGC) that TikTok bans.”

TikTok joins collective group to safeguard industry standards

Over the next few months, content credentials will be attached to content on TikTok and retained when media is downloaded. Other platforms using this technology will be able to use it in the same way.

The Chinese-owned app, which is working to overturn a US government ban bill, has also confirmed that it will join the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), the tech industry umbrella group led by Adobe.

The organization will collaborate to promote the gold standard for content certification and has recognized organizations such as Microsoft, Intel and the BBC among its members.

Dana Rao, general counsel and chief fiduciary officer at Adobe, said: “TikTok has a large community of creators and users around the world, and we are excited to welcome them to C2PA and CAI as they embark on a journey to provide greater transparency and truth to TikTok. Sexual journey.”

He added: “In an era where any digital content can be altered, it is vital to provide the public with a way to discern authenticity. Today’s announcement is a critical step in achieving this outcome.”
