Spotify reuses its live audio technology with Listening Party feature

Spotify’s live audio app is no longer active, but the company has been using the technology to better connect fans and artists through its “Listening Party” feature. The feature allows highly engaged fans to attend events like an artist’s album release and have the opportunity to ask them questions.

The company confirmed to TechCrunch that it has been testing this feature in the United States and Indonesia since December 2023, with plans to expand to more markets.

“It’s still in the early stages, but we’ve been testing it with a number of artists over the past few months, including Zara Larsson and Bleachers,” a Spotify spokesperson said.

Listening parties are listed under the Events section of the artist profile. Spotify says that while a band’s top fans typically receive specific invitations, any Spotify Premium user can join a listening party via the list. The company didn’t specify what kind of users count as superfans, other than those who have “demonstrated an affinity for the artist over time.”

Because Spotify uses real-time audio technology, fans can request to “come on stage” to interact with artists during sessions. Additionally, there will be a live chat room for each listening party during the event.

The company says the feature allows fans to purchase an artist’s latest merchandise while streaming music with other fans. Last year, the company launched an in-app merchandise hub that provides fans with personalized recommendations to purchase works from different artists.

It’s worth noting that Spotify has a group session feature for listening to songs with friends. Now it’s trying to combine some group listening and live audio interaction with listening party functionality.

Over the past few years, the company has also tried to increase direct interaction between fans and artists through merchandising, events and ticketing.
