Poe introduces per-message pricing revenue model for AI bot creators

Bot creators now have a new way to make money with Poe, Quora’s AI chatbot platform. On Monday, the company launched a revenue model that allows creators to set a per-message price for their bots so they can make money whenever users send them messages. This follows the launch of a revenue sharing program earlier in October 2023, whereby bot creators will receive a share of the revenue when their users subscribe to Poe’s premium products.

First launched by Quora in February 2023, Poe offers users the ability to try out a variety of AI chatbots, including those from ChatGPT maker OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and more. The idea is to provide consumers with an easy way to use new AI technology in one place, while also providing Quora with a potential source of new content.

The company’s revenue model puts a new twist on the creator economy by rewarding AI enthusiasts for generating “hint bots” as well as developer-built server bots integrated with Poe AI.

Last fall, Quora announced it would launch a revenue-sharing program with bot creators and said it would “soon” offer creators the option to set a per-message fee on their bots. Although nearly 5 months have passed since that announcement (not “quickly”), the latter is now live.

Adam DeAngelo, CEO of Quora Monday explained Poe users will only see the message points for each bot, which contain the same points as free users or Poe subscribers. However, creators will be paid in U.S. dollars, he said.

“This pricing mechanism is important for developers with heavy model inference or API costs,” D’Angelo noted in an article on X. “Our goal is to provide a thriving ecosystem for model developers and bot creators who build on models, and covering these operating costs is a key part of that,” he added.

D’Angelo believes that new revenue models may spur the development of new types of robots, including in areas such as tutoring, knowledge, assistants, analysis, storytelling and image generation.

The product is currently only available to U.S. bot creators, but will expand globally in the future. It joins the Creator Monetization Program, where each user who subscribes to Poe can pay up to $20 through creator bots.

In addition to the per-message revenue model, Poe is also launching an enhanced analytics dashboard showing the average revenue creator bots earn across paywalls, subscriptions, and messages. Its insights, updated daily, will give creators a better grasp of how their pricing drives bot usage and revenue.
