OnePlus continues to develop its own version of Google Magic Eraser

OnePlus has always marched to the beat of its own drum — for better or worse. Take the company’s latest foray into the field of mobile artificial intelligence, AI Eraser, for example. Before you ask, no, this isn’t just a rebadged version of Google’s long-standing and very good Magic Eraser.

No, OnePlus went ahead and developed its own version to show the world its own AI ambitions. The Oppo-owned company has likely been working on AI Eraser for a while now — although the world has known about Google’s version since the Pixel 6 launch in March 2021 (Magic Editor, meanwhile, was released a year ago (Premiered at I/O 2023)).

Judging from its press materials, the company built this thing from the ground up, starting with its own first-party large-scale language model.

“AI Eraser is the result of OnePlus’ significant R&D investment,” the company noted in its press materials. “The proprietary LL.M.s behind the new feature have been trained on massive data sets, allowing it to understand complex scenarios.” By With this advanced visual understanding, AI Eraser intelligently replaces unwanted objects with contextually appropriate elements, naturally enhancing the appeal of photos and enabling users to perform high-quality photo editing on the go.”

There’s no denying that the AI-powered eraser is a handy feature, but it’s also one that Google is killing immediately. Developing this feature directly may not be the best use of R&D resources, especially since it is currently available on iOS and Android devices through Google Photos.

More than anything, this seems to be OnePlus’ attempt to plant its own flag in the upcoming smartphone year. Hopefully next time, it will use those resources to build something truly different from the existing property.

AI will be launched on OnePlus devices this month, starting with the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, OnePlus 11, OnePlus Open, and OnePlus Nord CE 4.However, it will not appear in R12-D12.
