Microsoft to spin off Office and Teams globally after years of criticism

Microsoft is launching new versions of its Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites that do not include Teams, which it has spun off following scrutiny from EU regulators and complaints from rival Slack.

This comes after Microsoft agreed last year to sell Office 365 suites without Microsoft Teams in the EU and Switzerland. The company launched Teams in 2017 as a free product within its Office 365 suite.

Many businesses believe Microsoft enjoys an unfair advantage by combining the two products. Salesforce-owned Slack called the move “illegal,” claiming Microsoft forced customers to install Teams with its market-leading productivity suite and hid the true cost of the chat and video service.

The company said in a statement to Reuters that the demerger “also addresses feedback from the European Commission, providing multinationals with greater flexibility when they want to standardize sourcing across regions.”

Reuters reported that Microsoft will launch the new Office 365 series on Monday. As of publishing time, Microsoft has not yet implemented this change.

TechCrunch has reached out to Microsoft for more details. We will update this story as we learn more.
