Microsoft announces new artificial intelligence center in London

Microsoft will open a dedicated artificial intelligence-focused office in London, aptly named “Microsoft AI London”, focused on advancing language models and tools underlying the model.

The AI ​​center will be located in the heart of the capital and will be led by AI scientist and engineer Jordan Hoffman. Prior to joining Microsoft AI, Hoffman worked at Inflection and London-based DeepMind.

While the opening date is unclear, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has said at X that “we are hiring!” but he did not disclose how many roles will be created.

“Over the coming weeks and months, we will be posting job openings and actively recruiting people who want to solve some of the most interesting and challenging AI problems of our time,” Suleiman said in a company blog post. of outstanding talents.”

“We are looking for new team members who are driven by impact at scale, who are passionate innovators and eager to contribute to a team culture where continuous learning is the norm.”

He also talked about his experience in the field and hinted at continued focus on the field: “The UK has a wealth of AI talent and expertise, and Microsoft AI plans to make significant long-term investments in the region as we begin to hire the best artificial intelligence Smart scientists and engineers join this new artificial intelligence center.”

Investment in the UK workforce

Previously, Microsoft invested 2.5 billion pounds to improve the skills of the British workforce in the artificial intelligence era and build infrastructure to promote the artificial intelligence economy. The feature was announced in December 2023 and is expected to be available within the next three years.

The tech giant has also pledged to introduce 20,000 state-of-the-art GPUs to the country by 2026.

At the time of the investment announcement, the focus was on London and Cardiff, with potential expansion into the north of England.
