2024 will be the first time that I, a person who has been in the game industry for about ten years, attend the Game Developers Conference. I’d heard the stories, seen the photos, and now it was finally time to go myself. I lost five pounds from walking alone, ate the most garlicky noodles on the green earth, and finally met a lot of people whose names I knew from my computer over the years. In short, awesome! However, the part that no one really prepared me for was how Passionate Everyone cares about business.
It’s not just a passion for the minutiae of game design. There was also an undercurrent (there was a very vocal voice during the awards) Overcurrent) is interested in games as agents or drivers of social change. I managed to briefly chat with the developers of Seumas McNally Best Indie Game Award winner Venba about their game’s success and the opportunities for indies: “I think games are unique because you only need a computer to make them .” A game. Unlike music or movies, which are more regulated, resources for the next big indie game are likely to be very limited. So I think indies will always be healthy, even if the environment they’re in isn’t. “
Another highlight for me was the breadth of games industry experience on display. The variety of people I shook hands with was dizzying, from C-suite executives to developers (and their stories from the trenches) to members of the press who I’d long admired. That’s not to say there aren’t parts that struck me as a bit baffling: the layout of the entire complex is incredible, and not just in size. At the show, I kept walking into certain booths with no clue what they were showing.
Personally, Princess Peach and her dramatic costume changes stayed with me on my way back from GDC. Now it’s time to tackle the other two big games released while I was away: Rise of Ronin and Dragon’s Dogma 2. I might be able to surface for some fresh air at some point… oh, I don’t know, maybe when Tales of the Ronin Kenzera: Zau is released next month? I’ll try to make some time for the “open road,” but given the one-two-three punch of March 22nd, we’ll see how much that helps us.
