GV invests in Home From College, a career platform for Generation Z

Home From College, a career platform for young professionals and college students looking for their first job or internship, announced Wednesday it has raised $5.4 million in a seed round led by GV (formerly Google Ventures).

The new funding will be used to build the platform’s main product, “Gig,” a marketplace for companies to list jobs, ranging from part-time and internship opportunities to one-off projects and more permanent positions. Home From College offers job listings for hundreds of top brands such as Poppi, Aquaphor, Burt’s Bees, Nivea, Urban Decay, Thrive Market, Peacock, Steve Madden, and more.

The Los Angeles-based startup was founded in 2021 by Julia Haber, who founded WAYV, a marketing firm that creates “branded experiences” like pop-up stores on college campuses; and a former financial analyst at Sony Music Entertainment Kaj Zandvliet.

“Home From College” originated from events hosted by WAYV, where students expressed their “fear of unemployment after graduation” and “not having their own job.” [college] “Majors align with what they really want to do in life,” Haber told TechCrunch. Other pain points include students not being able to find an enjoyable way to earn extra money while in college, or not qualifying for a job due to an empty resume.

Home From College aims to disrupt the traditional job search approach for Generation Z, who prefer more flexible work opportunities outside of the 9-to-5 job. According to Fiverr, Gen Z is referred to by some as the “freelance generation,” with 67% of Gen Z embracing freelancing and 71% prioritizing jobs with flexible hours. Gen Z is also exploring more creative roles, with many looking to develop careers in social media, entertainment, marketing, beauty and fashion.

Haber wants Home From College to be a place where students can find jobs that fit their busy lifestyles and provide valuable experience relevant to their career paths and goals. So instead of applying for unpaid internships, they can pursue side hustles like social media ambassadors or logo designers.

“I work full time, so I’ve been using [Home From College] as a way to get a side hustle,” recent SUNY Oneonta graduate Sierra Estevez told us. “I was able to sift through different job opportunities and find the hours that worked for me Scope or scheduling opportunities. “

When reviewing the market, most listings are one-offs that focus primarily on content creation or product testing, with many brands offering these services to gain feedback from a younger demographic. Compensation varies widely. For example, Nivea is currently offering $500 to create two TikTok videos. Smaller businesses offer much lower compensation, with one company paying just $15 to try out a product and leave a review.

“All performances on Home From College are paid… [it] help clear [jobs] It might feel dishonest to students, or it might feel like they’re manipulating their time, because we know Gen Z cares about that very much as well… We always want to make sure that opportunities for career starters are always realistic in terms of their value The compensation exchange is,” Haber said. She added that the team reviews all listings before they go live.

Another way Home From College caters to Gen Z and differs from other job sites is its interview feature, where students can answer questions from real companies and post those questions to their own profiles. For example, “If you had to describe your personal brand in one sentence, what would you say?” or “What role do you play in a group setting?”

Additionally, the platform allows students to showcase their personality with fun profile cover designs and colorful pages that explain their background, experience and what they are looking for.

Students can also view the number of times their resume has been viewed by a company and the total number of profile views per week and month. Companies will see similar dashboards that track the number of applicants under review and the number of contracts signed.

Students can also receive messages from companies, giving them the opportunity to network with future employers.

“I can actually talk to different people from these brands, whereas on other platforms I’ve tried, which is a message I post or an app I send to the abyss, I never really get a reply,” Ace Tevez added.

Home From College also competes with design tools like Canva with its newest feature, Resume Studio. Although the templates provided by Home From College are arguably not as advanced as Canva templates, they can serve as a starting point for students who have never created a professional resume before. The resume builder is still in beta, so the selection may improve over time.

Home From College is free for students and offers three subscription levels for companies: Starter ($99 per month), Growth Mode ($199 per month), and Enterprise (prices vary). Students pay directly through the Home From College platform, and the company charges a 20% service fee on the price of each invoice.

The platform has more than 100,000 users. Harber said College Homecoming has helped recruit “thousands and thousands” of employees.

Home From College primarily caters to people who are just starting their careers, however, the company wants to expand its offerings to people who have been working for a decade or less.

The company previously raised $1.5 million from PEAK6 and angel investors.
