Grok AI chatbot launching this week for X premium users

Grok, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot, will start rolling out to all Premium X users this weekend.

Musk himself shared the news on the social media platform on Tuesday (March 26), after the AI tool was previously only available to Premium+ subscribers who paid $168 per year.

Users can ask the chatbot any burning questions or queries and the answers can be posted directly to X. We’ve shared an instructional video to give an in-depth look at how it works, and check it out alongside the announcement post for Tesla owners.

The news comes amid escalating competition with OpenAI and ongoing litigation. Elon Musk is suing OpenAI, its CEO Sam Altman and others, accusing them of violating contractual promises made during the company’s 2015 founding.

The entrepreneur helped co-found the ChatGPT parent company but left in 2018, citing conflicts of interest over artificial intelligence in its business.

Now, his attention turned to his startup, xAI, which later developed the Grok software.

What is Grok AI?

Grok AI was launched by Elon Musk in November 2023 and was quickly hailed as an alternative to ChatGPT, but it is only available through the X platform.

Unlike other AI technologies, Grok is programmed to exhibit a politically incorrect and witty personality, taking inspiration from conservative commentators like Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan.

It also provides real-time access to current events, including developments in the field of artificial intelligence technology. It can write stories, summarize website content, translate languages, and research and answer questions.

Historically, it was only available to the most exclusive and expensive tier of X subscribers. It’s described on the app’s website as a “special group.”

It’s unclear when Grok AI will be available to everyone, and the team remains focused on development.
