Google announced today that it will soon launch on-device artificial intelligence features such as record summaries and smart replies on Pixel 8. These features will be based on the Gemini Nano, a small model Google released last year, ready to run on devices.
Summarizer in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard will be released as developer previews in the next Pixel feature release, the company said. The company announced these features during the Pixel 8 launch event last October. So far, the Gemini Nano-powered feature is only available on the Pixel 8 Pro and Galaxy S24.
“Running large language models on phones with different memory specifications can provide different user experiences, so we have been testing and validating this on Pixel 8. We are excited to provide more enthusiasts and developers to try Gemini Nano opportunity where we hope to get more feedback and see more innovation,” the company said.
Until now, Google has mostly focused on developing AI features that rely on the cloud, even if they are targeted at mobile devices.
In January, Google launched Circle to Search for select Pixel and Samsung devices. The company announced this week that more Pixel and Samsung phones, as well as some tablets, will get the Circle to Search feature. The feature itself will be updated to support instant translation of on-screen content.
