A career coach, your boss, a coworker who has changed jobs multiple times: these are probably your first stops when you want someone to give you great career advice. But there’s confusion about where young employees are looking for advice.

This is not surprising. Generation Z, which currently accounts for about 2 billion of the world’s population and will account for 27% of the workforce by next year, has significantly different job requirements than their older colleagues.

49% say work is central to their sense of identity, while younger workers cite work-life balance, remote working and flexible time off as top priorities when looking for a job.

Another thing that sets them apart is that they are quicker to give up on a job if it doesn’t fit their needs. In fact, a survey of American students found that they change jobs up to 10 times between the ages of 18 and 34.

That’s not all: This group of employees is values-driven and wants to work for companies that value diversity and inclusion. Value fit is also important, with 55% researching a company’s environmental impact and policies before accepting a job offer, and a further 17% changing jobs or industries due to climate concerns.

Traditional career advice is outdated

With all this in mind, it’s no surprise that Gen Z isn’t too keen on the traditional career advice route. In part because they feel unsupported at work, one in five employees say they have never had a career conversation with their manager, according to a study by Workplace Intelligence and INTOO.

63% believe their employer prioritizes productivity over career advancement, and three-quarters say they receive poor careers advice – many saying this comes from their own managers.

Their solution? Chat GPT. Open AI’s generative AI platform has seen widespread adoption since its launch in November 2022, with 47% of Gen Z employees saying they get better advice from chatbots than their managers.

This is a problem because while ChatGPT can help with a range of work-related tasks, such as helping you personalize your resume for job applications, its data may be outdated or irrelevant to the questions younger workers are asking. The free version ChatGPT 3.5 was trained using data only as of January 2022, while the paid subscription version ChatGPT 4 includes information as of April 2023.

But it’s still a year out of date, and if you ask it if it can provide advice, it replies, “For career-related advice and decisions, it’s often best to consult multiple sources, including experts in the field, career counselors and others .” Trustworthy website or publication. Additionally, considering your own unique circumstances, goals, and preferences is critical to making an informed decision about your career path. “

That’s good advice in itself, but it doesn’t help much when it comes to the 53% of employees surveyed in the Workplace Intelligence and INTOO survey that their managers are too busy to talk to them about their careers.
