Fallout 76 and Fallout 4 player surge thanks to Amazon TV show

Amazon Prime’s successful TV series Fallout premiered on April 10, seemingly pushing the latest game in the post-apocalyptic role-playing series to record player numbers.

SteamDB, which measures the number of players for every game listed on the PC market, said Fallout 76 hit a new peak of 39,445 concurrent players on Sunday. This number only counts PC players, and only those who have played the game on Steam. Fallout 76 is also available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X, as well as on PC through other storefronts and Xbox Game Pass.

Amazon Prime Gaming started offering the game, along with several others, for free to subscribers this month. From April 12 to April 15, Microsoft is making the game free to anyone with an Xbox or PC, regardless of whether they pay for Xbox Game Pass.

According to SteamDB, Fallout 76 attracted a respectable but much lower number of players per month before the TV series debuted. In March, the game peaked at 12,735 concurrent users. The all-time high before last weekend was in May 2022, when the number of players reached 32,982.

Fallout 76’s sibling is also doing well in player numbers, likely due to interest generated by the Amazon show. Fallout 4, launched in 2015, returned to the top 20 on Steam over the weekend, with a peak number of online players reaching 83,491. While far from an all-time high, this number is well above Fallout 4’s consecutive months of peak player numbers between 15,000 and 22,000.

Everything you need to know about Fallout 4’s next-gen update

Fallout 4, the single-player open-world role-playing adventure game launched nearly 10 years ago, is finally getting an update that brings the game to modern console hardware. As of now, it’s playable via backwards compatibility support on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

The update will make Fallout 4 a native app on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and give users Performance Mode and Quality Mode to increase image resolution or play at 60 frames per second.

The free upgrade will start on April 25th. PC players will also get an update to the game that promises additional stability fixes as well as fixes for problematic questlines and more. All platforms (including PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4) will receive a new set of missions, as well as additional in-game content developed through the Creation Club, Fallout 4’s official mod portal.

“Fallout 4” will be available on the Epic Games Store starting on April 25 and will be verified by Steam Deck on that day.
