Elon Musk says AI chatbot Grok will be available to all premium subscribers on X this week

The company, formerly known as Twitter, will soon make its Grok chatbot available to more paying subscribers, its owner said on Tuesday, after Elon Musk’s xAI open-sourced its Grok large language model in early March.exist Posts on XMusk announced that Grok will be available to Premium subscribers this week, rather than just being limited to Premium+ subscribers like before.

The move could signal a desire to compete more directly with other popular chatbots, such as OpemAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude. But it could also be a sign that X is trying to increase its subscriber count. The news comes amid data showing fewer people are using Platform X and efforts to retain those who do. According to NBC News, the latest data from Sensor Tower shows that as of February, X usage in the United States fell by 18% year-on-year and by 23% since Musk’s acquisition.

Musk’s war on advertisers may also be hurting the company’s revenue prospects, as Sensor Tower found that 75 of the top 100 U.S. advertisers on X will no longer spend their ad budgets on the platform as of October 2022 .

Providing access to AI chatbots could prevent X users from fleeing to other platforms, such as decentralized platforms Mastodon and Bluesky, or Instagram’s Threads, which are rapidly gaining traction on the back of Meta’s resources, with monthly users as of Q4 2023 The number exceeds 130 million.

Musk didn’t say when Grok would be available for X users, saying only that it would be “available to all Premium subscribers later this week.”

X Premium is Mid-level subscription of the company Pricing starts at $8 per month (online) or $84 per year. Previously, Grok was only available to Premium+ subscribers, priced at $16 per month or $168 per year.

Grok’s chatbot is likely to appeal to Musk followers and X-heavy users because it answers questions about topics that other AI chatbots are typically off-limits to discuss, such as conspiracies or more controversial political views. It will also answer questions with a “rebellious attitude,” as Musk describes it. Most notably, Grok has access to real-time X data – something competitors cannot offer.

Of course, if X is losing users, the value of that data may diminish under Musk.
