Elon Musk plans to charge new X users to enable posting

Elon Musk plans to charge new X users a small fee to be able to post on the social network and curb the bot problem.

In response to an X account who posted about the changes on X’s website, Musk said charging new accounts a small fee was the “only way” to stop “bot attacks”

“Current AI (and troll farms) can easily pass ‘are you a robot,'” Musk said, referring to tools like CAPTCHAs.

As with many announcements related to the social platform, there are currently no details on when the policy will apply and what fees new users may need to pay.

Last October, X began charging new unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines $1 per year. New free users who sign up for the platform from these regions can read the posts but cannot interact with them. To publish content, for example, retweet, reply, bookmark, and quote posts, they must pay a fee. Musk will likely charge similar fees to other regions.

Earlier this month, X said the platform A mass purge of spam accounts is beginning, warning users that their follower counts may be affected. However, with its plan to charge new users, the social media company appears to be aiming to better address the bot problem.

While Musk has talked about fighting AI bots, last year, X updated its policy to include a provision that public posts could be used to train machine learning algorithms or AI models. Additionally, in July 2023, Musk said that his artificial intelligence company xAI would use public posts to train models.

Earlier this month, xAI made its Grok chatbot available to premium users of X for $8 per month. Previously, Premium+ users paid $16 per month to use the chatbot. Last week, Fortune reported that Project X is making Grok available for users to write posts.
