Despite facing a barrage of legal proceedings against former US President Donald Trump, his net worth is now higher than ever and the businessman has become one of the 500 richest people in the world.

What is Donald Trump’s net worth?

Trump’s fortunes have received an incredible boost following the recent completion of the merger between Trump’s social media company Trump Media Technology Group (TMTG) and special purpose acquisition company Digital World Acquisition Corporation (DWAC). The deal was completed on Monday (March 25), raising the 77-year-old’s total wealth to $6.5 billion, according to Bloomberg.

Trump owns nearly 80 million shares of the company that operates Truth Social, accounting for about 58% of the combined entity, which will begin trading on Tuesday under the ticker DJT.

Based on DWAC’s closing price of $49.95 on Monday, Trump’s 58% stake currently has a book value of approximately $3.9 billion. His net worth only increased by $22.5 million, according to his last disclosure form, and that huge increase accounts for most of the $4 billion surge in his net worth over the past few days.

The timing of the merger and his surge in personal wealth couldn’t be better for Trump, who faces huge civil fraud penalties. A New York appeals court initially ordered a $464 million bond to avoid asset seizures, but later significantly reduced that amount to $175 million — an amount Trump claimed he could pay.

However, Trump can’t immediately cash in on his new paper fortune from the TMTG merger because his stock is locked up for about six months under the terms of the merger agreement. There are also lingering questions about the company’s financial viability, with revenue of less than $3.5 million in the first nine months of 2023 and a net loss of $49 million in the same period.

Still, Trump’s entry into the rarefied realm of the world’s highest net worth people represents a stunning reversal from legal and financial troubles that seemed to be intensifying just 24 hours ago. For now, his long-held claim that he’s a billionaire is undisputed.

Trump celebrated the news on his network, Truth Social, and tweeted a Fox News report titled “Always One Step Ahead.”
