Apple’s Jony Ive and OpenAI’s Sam Altman seek funding for new AI personal devices

Former Apple design chief Jony Ive and current Open AI CEO Sam Altman are seeking funding for a new “artificial intelligence-powered personal device.”

Sources who spoke to The Information said the two are working together on the new device. The exact details are unclear, but it reportedly looks nothing like a smartphone.

Plans for this new project have been in progress since autumn 2023, but funding is now being sought to make it a reality. Ivey and Altman come from high-ranking circles in the tech world and have attracted the attention of some of the biggest names in tech investing.

Ive and Altman seek billions in investment in personal devices

Ive and Altman aim to raise at least $1 billion for the new company, which has not yet been named, these sources said. Investors currently in talks include former OpenAI investor Thrive Capital, SoftBank CEO and super investor Masayoshi Son, and venture capital firm Emerson Collective.

Since Altman and Ive both come from tech giant backgrounds, they already have the personal connections to start negotiating with at least some of the giants in the industry. That could bring the lofty goal of an initial investment of $1 billion closer.

What’s more, their backgrounds directly influence what we know about the device. Ive comes from Apple and has experience with personal devices. In fact, Apple itself is rumored to be integrating AI more directly into the software of future smartphones.

For Altman, artificial intelligence has been his bread and butter for some time, not only through OpenAI as the founder of ChatGPT, but also through various other artificial intelligence ventures that the CEO has been investing in and helping. For now, there is no sign that Apple or OpenAI will be directly involved in this new personal device company.
