Apple’s iOS 18 rolls out new customization options, a redesigned Photos app, a gaming mode, and more

It’s that time of year when Apple unveils a slew of software updates for its ever-growing collection of devices, hoping to deliver user-requested tweaks and new features that lay the groundwork for the next generation of technology.

As always, we announced a bunch of new iOS updates, giving us an inside look at what’s coming to iOS 18. Here’s a summary of what we saw for iOS 18 at WWDC 2024.

What’s new in iOS 18? WWDC 2024 announcement

Taking a first look at the changes to customization in iOS 18, the Control Center feels like a whole new place. You can add, remove, and change where these controls are, as well as a new multi-page system to have more controls than ever before. In addition, a new control gallery allows third-party developer widgets to be placed in the center, opening up a whole new world for quick, on-the-fly settings changes.

Messages also got a ton of new features, some of which users have been asking for, and some of which just make life easier. You can now schedule messages to be sent later, send iMessages without Wi-Fi or carrier service, and use additional text effects like underline, dither, and strikethrough.

The Photos app is getting its biggest overhaul yet, with a host of tweaks to cope with your ever-growing photo library. With iOS 18, you can group people in your photos, hide screenshots, and with the new Collections feature, keeping track of your photos couldn’t be easier.

Game mode debuted in iOS 18, which is not surprising to be honest, as gaming is increasingly a strategy for Apple, with arcade games being a great source of revenue, coupled with AAA blockbusters like Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed being natively launched on the device.

Other new features include disabling the ability to open apps via Face ID, Journal app improvements, offline map support, a new Apple Pay system, home screen layouts, and automatic categorization in Mail.

Overall, iOS 18 will make life a lot easier for iPhone users, streamlining various apps and adding new customization features that will let you tailor your device to suit you, rather than the standard options that seem rigid today.
