Apple Vision Pro app developers can’t get some data, but users should be grateful

Apple’s security restrictions on Vision Pro create obstacles for app developers, but future users will be happy to see privacy protections in place.

The Vision Pro launched in the US only back in February and is expected to launch in China and several other countries later this year. So it’s no surprise that app developers want a piece of the pie. However, according to a report from The Information via 9to5Mac, Apple is limiting the types of apps the company wants to make.

Developers complained that they couldn’t use the device’s built-in camera. For example, Antony Vitillo, developer of the AR fitness game HitMotion, said he wants to access the product’s camera so users can “interact” with real-world items like sandbags.

Privacy Boundaries for Apple Vision Pro

However, for privacy reasons, Apple doesn’t allow apps to access that level of data – and for good reason. Not so long ago, people would remember the controversy surrounding the Google Glass AR headset.

Users are uncomfortable with the ubiquitous cameras on their headsets, and there are widespread concerns about data protection and privacy.

Apple has long been known for its strong privacy measures, so users and developers can expect that it won’t let up on its strictness with products like this either. While some applications may want to access the camera for purely practical, useful reasons, opening the door may also allow entry for some malicious people or groups.

No matter how good the app is, it’s not worth giving up potentially unlimited access to the cameras people display in their homes. According to Forbes, recent data from HP shows that 49% of Americans are worried about someone spying on them via a webcam, which is certainly a welcome hurdle from a consumer perspective.

Fortunately, Apple has at least ticked a box in its book when it released the Vision Pro, which was criticized for its price tag.
