Amazon is rolling out AI voice search to Fire TV devices

Amazon is rolling out an AI-powered search feature for Fire TV that will enable Alexa to answer open-ended questions about TV shows and movies and provide more specific recommendations based on user preferences.

The feature was announced at Amazon’s annual device event last September and is powered by a proprietary Large Language Model (LLM). The AI is able to understand natural language and phrases and can answer specific questions, such as “Which movie has the line ‘Life is like a box of chocolates’?” (Forrest Gump, by the way). It can also provide options based on actor, character, genre, and theme.

Alexa can also recommend titles that are included in the streaming services you subscribe to. So if you ask Alexa to find a psychological thriller with a surprising ending, it will only show you content that’s available for you to watch.

The new feature will be available in the next few weeks to US customers using Fire TV devices running Fire OS 6 or higher.

The new search feature is Amazon’s latest effort to add generative AI capabilities to Fire TV. The company previously launched an AI image generator for TV backgrounds and three Alexa experiences that let you play games and compose songs.
