AI music generators Suno and Udio sued by major US record labels

The music industry, including major record labels Sony Music and Universal Music Group, has announced a lawsuit against artificial intelligence companies Suno and Udio, accusing them of massive copyright infringement.

AI music generators accused of using recordings from record labels to train their systems to create content This would “directly compete with, devalue, and ultimately drown out” the work of human artists, according to a federal lawsuit filed against Udio in New York and against Suno in Massachusetts.

Under the protection of the Recording Industry Association of America, the plaintiffs sought damages of up to $150,000 for each infringed work.

A press release from the industry alliance stated: “Unauthorized services like Suno and Udio claim that it’s ‘fair’ to copy an artist’s life’s work without consent or payment and exploit it for personal gain, standing in the way of truly innovative AI that holds promise for all of us.”

The statement continued: “These are clear cases of copyright infringement involving the unauthorized copying of sound recordings on a large scale.”

Strongly refuted claims

Music Generator has not publicly disclosed what exactly its system is trained on, but Suno CEO Mikey Shulman said in a statement: “Our technology is transformative and is designed to generate entirely new output rather than memorize and repeat existing content.”

Udio did not immediately respond to a request for comment on their actions.

Claims that there is no direct correlation between AI-generated content and existing music have been strongly refuted. The complaint from the record companies (which also includes Warner Records) outlines how Suno and Udio users can copy certain aspects of songs, such as “My Girl” by The Temptations, “I Just Want You for Christmas” by Mariah Carey, and “I Own You (And I Feel Good)” by James Brown and can produce sounds that are “indistinguishable” from artists like Bruce Springsteen and ABBA.
