A16z opens applications for third Speedrun tech and games category, $75M accelerator

A16z has opened applications for its latest Speedrun technology and gaming accelerator category, the third such category for the $75 million accelerator.

The A16z Games Speedrun accelerator will also be moving from the San Francisco Bay Area to Los Angeles. SR003 is the third iteration of an intensive 12-week training program for gaming and technology entrepreneurs that will culminate in Demo Day during SF Tech Week.

As part of its commitment to invest up to $75 million in some of the most promising pre-seed startups to help shape the future of the gaming industry, A16z Games will increase its investment in each selected Speedrun company to $750,000 .

A16Z Games recently concluded the second edition of Speedrun SR002 and held a demo day during GDC with over 370 investors in attendance, representing over $500 billion in assets under management.

Category 2 details

SR002 has witnessed many early-stage companies disrupting the tech x gaming industry, covering various verticals, including:

  • 43% are infrastructure plus tools, with members from top tech companies including Discord, Zynga, Google, Apple, Square, Palantir, Magic Leap and Xsolla.
  • 35% of game studios are founded by newbies and veterans from companies like Rocket League, Blizzard, Epic Games, Jam City, King, and Supercell.
  • 25% of consumer apps/platforms, led by veterans of Magic Leap, Crunchyroll, Dapper Labs, Canva and Snap, create communities and safe spaces for online players.
  • 49% Artificial Intelligence, led by PhDs from Stanford, MIT and Oxford.

A16z stated that the Speedrun program is very selective, with approximately 1% of applicants selected for the final batch of the program. Participants receive not only financial support from A16z Games, but also support from a curated group of industry coaches, mentors and a community of ambitious founders.

As a result, 80% of the participating companies in SR001 received investor funding after graduating from Demo Day.

SR003 will run for 12 weeks starting on July 29, 2024 and ending with a demo day during SF Technology Week in October 2024.
